Marlins New Stadium on track…

Posted by willmanso on February 15, 2011

I took a tour of the Marlins new stadium this afternoon, and I must say, I was very impressed with the place.  Simply put, it was amazing to look at.  Granted, it’s costing close to a half-a-billion dollars to build, but it’ll likely be one of the most impressive home parks in all of baseball when complete.

The site lines to watch are all great, and the park has a real intimate feel.  The upper deck feels like it’s right on the field, so most fans in the 37,000 seat stadium will have good views of the action.  Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria told me the stadium was on target to be ready for March of 2012.  Remember, the Marlins wouldn’t play there in a regular season game until April of 2012, so basically, it’s right on target.  As for the players, a handful of guys were there and took batting practice.  Of course, the people shagging the balls were construction workers, but that didn’t stop players from being in awe.  Mike Stanton told me, “this place is awesome.”  He then went ahead and hit a home run that landed on what will be a cat-walk in left-center field.  It bounced right out of the stadium.  The reaction about the stadium was similar from Hanley Ramirez, Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez.  You can see the place for yourself in some of the pictures I took today.  Here’s the link below:

Loria Expects Playoffs…

Posted by willmanso on February 15, 2011

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has never been someone who holds back his true feelings.  It was no different on Monday during the team’s annual pre-season media luncheon.  Loria said point-blank that he thinks the Marlins should be a playoff team and said, “I’d match my guys up with anybody.”   I asked him if he would be disappointed if the team didn’t make the postseason.  His response was, “why wouldn’t I?  The answer is we’re gonna try to get there.  We have the horses to do it.”

Loria does have some horses, and a couple of them attended the lunch.  Ace pitcher Josh Johnson looked to be in great shape and said he was already at his playing weight, while 20-year old slugger Mike Stanton looked to be even stronger than last season.  That’s saying a lot for one of the biggest and strongest players in the game.  His potential is really unlimited.  Stanton told me that he doesn’t feel much pressure now that he’s starting the year on the big league club.  He added, “I’ve gotta be patient and let it come and not try to do too much.”  While he doesn’t feel the pressure, the Marlins are pinning a lot of their hopes on Stanton to be a run producer to make up for the loss of Dan Uggla.  He may end up being another Miguel Cabrera, who produced from the start with the Fish.  Then again, young players are unpredictable.  I’d put my money on Stanton producing, but it’ll be something to watch.

The biggest topic of discussion, in particular for the starting pitchers, was the effort made to improve the bullpen.  The Marlins focused on taking care of that major issue from last season.  While the addition to the middle relief unit should really help the starters, I’m still not 100% sold on Leo Nunez as the full-time closer.  He showed more flashes of becoming consistent last season, but overall, he’s still a real question mark.  If he can be consistent, the Fish seem to have the right guys in the pen to hold the lead for the starters.

As for those starters, we know Johnson is the ace, and he’s a Cy Young candidate when healthy.  Ricky Nolasco got a long-term deal in the offseason, and the Marlins have to hope he’ll keep his focus and determination now that he’s getting paid.  Meantime, Anibal Sanchez looked in great shape today, and he’s a guy I think can make a huge jump this season.  People can’t forget about the veteran addition of Javier Vazquez.  Most view Vazquez as a guy who’s flamed out in big spots with the Yankees, but overall, he’s been one of the more consistent starters in baseball over the last decade.  He’s a lock to pitch 200 innings and win 11-14 games.  That’s not bad on a staff that’s filled with so much potential.  Finally, Chris Volstad will get the first crack at the #5 spot in the rotation, but look for lefty Sean West to push him for the job.

Another question mark is what happens at 3rd base?  Youngster Matt Dominguez will get a shot at the job, but I’ll be honest with you, everything I’m hearing is that he may not be ready offensively to handle the majors.  He doesn’t need to be a machine at the plate in the spring to earn the job.  If he just shows he can make adjustments and handle the learning curve of facing major league pitching, he’ll get a fair chance to be the opening day 3rd baseman.  The more likely scenario to me is that newly acquired super utility man Omar Infante will start the year at the hot corner, and speedster Emilio Bonifacio will get the 2nd base job.  Again, this is just speculation on my part.  The Marlins will also give seldom mentioned Ozzie Martinez a look at 2nd base.  He showed some ability in limited action last season, and he intrigues the Florida front office with his potential.  If Dominguez falters, and the Fish prefer to have Bonifacio in a spot-starter, utility role, Martinez could earn the job.  This will all play out during the spring.

The rest of the team doesn’t have much drama or question marks.  Gaby Sanchez and Hanley Ramirez are set in the infield, while John Buck was brought in and paid big bucks to catch most days.  The outfield has great potential with Logan Morrison in left field, Chris Coghlan returning from injury in center and Stanton in right.  Depth is a major issue.  The Marlins need these 3 players to stay healthy.  Any injury means guys like Bonifacio, Scott Cousins and Bryan Peterson could be thrown into more significant roles.

Overall, I don’t think Loria is crazy to think the Marlins can challenge most teams.  I think it’s clear the Phillies are the top team in the National League, but everyone else is fair game to the Fish, including the Braves.  A healthy Marlins team could win 85-90 games and earn a wild card spot.  Like most seasons with this team, health will be a key and depth will be an issue.  Edwin Rodriguez has been given a nice core to try to prove himself before the  new stadium opens in 2012.  It’s clearly a one-year audition.  Loria’s proclamation about the playoffs is basically his alibi for letting Rodriguez go after the season, if the Fish don’t make noise in the playoff race.  Be warned skipper, the expectations are high.

Marlins Ugg-ly Move

Posted by willmanso on November 17, 2010

The Marlins have traded another major star. This time it’s Dan Uggla. I know what Marlins fans are thinking: we’ve seen this all before. I also know what you’re thinking about this blog: it’ll be all about ripping the Marlins front office. Well, for once, that’s not the case, at least not entirely. Those who visit the blog often know that I’ve never been too fond of the perceived cost cutting moves made by owner Jeffrey Loria and gang. In this case though, I’m willing to see it all play out, even though I’m not happy.

Like most Marlins fans (how many are even left?) , I hate the fact that the team traded away Uggla. He’s been as consistent of an offensive player in baseball over the last 4 years. He also happens to be the only 2nd baseman in Major League history to hit 30 or more homers in a season 4 times. He did that over the last 4 years. That’s a whole lot of offense to give up. Yet, the Fish did offer him a 4 year, 48 million dollar contract. Uggla’s camp wanted a 5 year deal worth around 70 million dollars. I firmly believe he’s worth every penny, but the Marlins were hesitant to give him that 5th year. Instead, they turned around and traded him to division rival Atlanta for 2nd baseman Omar Infante and left-handed reliever Mike Dunn. Infante is a solid player who plays good defense, while Dunn has a live arm that will help the team’s awful bullpen. That said, it seems like very little to get for a guy of Uggla’s resume. The team also could have paid Uggla about 12 million dollars in arbitration this season and then traded him away before next year’s All-Star break. All of this information would anger any Marlins fan.

Ugg-ly move?

Now, let’s get to why the Marlins think this will be a good deal. Larry Beinfest, the point man for all trades, says the Marlins intend on spending the money, they would have spent on Uggla, elsewhere. They did immediately upgrade at the catcher position by giving All-Star catcher John Buck a 3 year, 18 million dollar contract. The Marlins are also pursuing more bullpen help and a potential starting pitcher. Also, while they’ll miss Uggla’s power and run production, Infante will be a major defensive upgrade. Let’s not forget, Florida’s defense has been very bad over the last few seasons. Beinfest is hoping young stars like Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez and Logan Morrison (still developing power) will make up for the loss of Uggla’s bat. Again, I’m not defending the move, but the Marlins feel it can be a positive long-term. The front office still insists they will spend more money when the new ballpark opens up in 2012. They already have stars Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson locked up.

Here’s the problem with the Marlins line of thinking: fans are tired of promises. Cody Ross was given away to the Giants for nothing and became a World Series hero. Miguel Cabrera was shipped to Detroit for promising future stars Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller. While Cabrera is putting up Triple Crown numbers for the Tigers, Maybin and Miller were just traded away after flaming out in Florida. Now comes the trade of Uggla, and something really stinks about it. The Marlins are caught in a major dilemma with the new ballpark around the corner. They keep promising about building for the future, but all the moves in the present are driving fans away. Quite frankly, this team can’t afford to screw up another deal. While Beinfest has worked wonders in the past, he really struck out with the Cabrera move. Another swing and miss with Uggla would really dent this team’s image with fans. It doesn’t help that Loria is a reclusive owner who seems to just smirk in the background as hundreds of millions of dollars in public money are spent to build his new stadium.

I feel for you Marlins fans. I really do. I trust that Beinfest has a real plan in place to have a competitive team for 2011 and an even better team for the ballpark opening in 2012. All fans can do is hope. After this latest trade, that’s all you may have left. Just don’t give up yet. I’m willing to wait and see what happens. I’m either an optimist, or just very stupid. We shall see.

Marlins Choose Manager…

Posted by willmanso on November 2, 2010

I had heard for over a week now that the Marlins were leaning toward keeping Edwin Rodriguez as manager for the 2011 season, and that announcement is expected to become final tomorrow.  While it may not seem like a “sexy” or “bold” move by the team, I absolutely think it’s the right move.  The whole Bobby Valentine fiasco was bizarre, to say the least, but it was also clear that Bobby V wants to go to a team where he can get players.

The Marlins are in a holding pattern on major moves right now until the new stadium arrives in 2012.  While Jeffrey Loria and David Samson don’t exactly have the greatest track record for being trusted, I do believe the organization will spend more money on the team once the new stadium debuts.

That said, unless Valentine takes a job this year (Milwaukee passed on him today), I’d expect him to be a strong candidate for 2012.  I also wouldn’t rule out the Marlins making a push for Ozzie Gullien, who Loria is very fond of and who doesn’t exactly have a warm and fuzzy relationship with the front office in Chicago.  As for Rodriguez, he earned this chance.  The Marlins played hard for him after the firing of Fredi Gonzalez, and he’ll now have a full year to really prove himself.

If the Marlins go out in 2011 and make the playoffs, or contend until the end of the season, Rodriguez could make a case for being the long-term answer.  If they’re a .500 team again, there’s no doubt in my mind they’ll look elsewhere to find a leader into the new ballpark.   He’ll have his hands full.  The Marlins will take their usual wait-and-see approach to the free agent market.  They’ll count on Larry Beinfest’s knack for finding veteran retreads or guys coming off injury on the cheap.  While he’s been very good at that, Beinfest did prove last year that he’s not perfect.  Rodriguez practically will have to be if he wants to manage this team past 2011.

Marlins Blow Season

Posted by willmanso on August 30, 2010

Before football season starts and interest in baseball in South Florida totally fades away, here’s a thanks for nothing to the Marlins bullpen.  They’ve been a punchline to a joke all season long, but the joke isn’t funny anymore.  After blowing yet ANOTHER game on Sunday in Atlanta (they lead MLB in blown saves), Florida’s season has officially become a disaster.   You can put that fact ALL on the bullpen.  Yes, I sound a little bitter, but so do all Marlins fans.

Blame the Marlins front office, as well.  Larry Beinfest has struck gold so often that I normally would be fine with giving him a free pass, but looking back at this mess, we should have seen it coming.  The Fish entered spring training with full confidence that Leo Nunez could handle the closers role and a bunch of cast-offs and veterans could fill the other innings.  Man, were they ever wrong.  Nunez started off strong but has really faded down the stretch.  Meantime, the middle relief has been so bad that you could literally watch a game and predict a meltdown coming in the middle innings.  It’s a common problem for a low payroll team to have some areas of weakness, but what really hurts in this case is that the Marlins ”coulda been a contender!” (Yes, stealing a line from “On the Waterfront”)

Do the math, the Marlins have blown an astonishing 23 saves!!  They are currently 7 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race.  If they had any kind of bullpen and let’s say had blown just 16 saves (like the awful Kansas City Royals), the Fish would be in the heart of the playoff race.   The fact is, they have enough starting pitching and offense to be in the mix.  To blow that many saves, you must have plenty of leads in the middle to late innings.  Thanks to great seasons by Dan Uggla and Gaby Sanchez and more All-Star production from Hanley Ramirez, the Marlins have a balanced line-up.  Josh Johnson has been an ace, while despite the bullpen mess, Florida has the 13th best ERA in baseball.  Yet, here they are, out of the playoff race and lucky to finish over .500 on the season.

So let football season begin and RIP Marlins 2010 season.  The tombstone will read:  a talented team, with the worst bullpen money can’t buy!

Back to the Grind…

Posted by willmanso on August 22, 2010

It was nice to get away for a couple of weeks to recharge my batteries for football season, but I’m happy to be back.  As usual, even during a slow time in sports, plenty of things happened in South Florida.   Let’s see, in a nutshell, Udonis Haslem allegedly got caught with marijuana, Ronny Paulino got caught using performance enhancing drugs and Brandon Marshall couldn’t catch anything.   That’s it, right?

Well, a lot more will start happening now.  Already this weekend, Marshall showed why Dol-Fans need to relax, and the Marlins literally gave fan favorite Cody Ross away to the Giants.  So, let’s get ready for the next few months.  It should be fun!

Baseball Needs Replay

Posted by willmanso on August 6, 2010

I mean it needs REAL replay!  It’s not just the minimal replay system they have now on home runs.  This is becoming a joke, and not surprisingly, Bud Selig is the punchline.  Baseball’s commissioner has said he will not expand replay, even though it’s clear the sport needs it.  The latest case in point, the Marlins getting robbed of a win by an umpire.  They literally got robbed of the win!  I could explain what happened, but Local 10 sports Producer Dukie Lang takes care of that with this great explanation.  Enjoy:

Marlins win game; lose Coghlan

Posted by willmanso on July 27, 2010

The thrill of the victory and the agony of celebrating!  Wait, that’s not how the saying normally goes, but that’s exactly what the Marlins are thinking right now, as they deal with the loss of leadoff hitter Chris Coghlan.   Coghlan was placed on the 15 day disabled list today with a tear to the meniscus in his left knee.  He may miss the rest of the season, if surgery is needed.  It’s bad enough that last year’s NL Rookie of the Year is hurt, it’s even worse considering how he got injured.

Coghlan hurt the knee while celebrating a walk-off victory on Sunday against the Braves.  While teammate Wes Helms was being interviewed on the field, Coghlan raced out of the dugout and smashed a shaving cream pie in Helms face.   It’s become a tradition for the Fish to do that after last inning victories, but the joy of another thrilling win quickly turned into agony.  Coghlan landed awkwardly on his left leg, and the impact and twist caused his meniscus to tear (see picture below of Coghlan’s mid-air flight to injury).  Manager Edwin Rodriguez quickly placed a ban on that type of celebration, but it’s a little late for that.

Painful Pie

I’m all for players showing the passion and energy of kids when celebrating a great moment.  Actually, it’s one of the things that makes sports so great.  Grown men can feel and act like they’re 10 years old again in an instant.  Still, players have to be smarter on how they go about doing this.  Dog piles, pies in the face, jumping on backs and sometimes even tackling a teammate have become all too common of a scene.  Angels star Kendry Morales learned his lesson all to painfully earlier this season.  After hitting a walk-off home run, he jumped like a little kid on home plate, only to break his ankle while landing.   He’s out for the rest of the year.   Now, Coghlan may join him.  Let’s hope it’s a lesson learned for everyone.

Nate not great, but solid

Posted by willmanso on March 31, 2010

The Marlins trade for lefthander Nate Robertson may not shake up the baseball world, but it’s another solid move by Larry Beinfest and the team’s front office.  The Fish were not sure how the 5th spot in the rotation would finally shake out, but they knew it would be a righthander taking the spot.  That is, until the deal for the veteran Robertson.

The former Tigers starter gives the team a much-needed lefty in the rotation, and he comes with experience.  Robertson has never been a star, but he’s been a very productive guy in the Tigers rotation.  Injuries have slowed him down of late, and he certainly could flop in Florida.  Still, I like him at the back-end of a very young but talented Marlins rotation.  I think a change of leagues and teams might just be what Robertson needs to bounce back.   He’s looked solid in the spring and is said to be healthy.   Plus, the Tigers are paying most of his salary, and Jay Voss, the pitching prospect the team traded to Detroit in the deal, was not considered a long-term piece in the Marlins plans.  Overall, it’s an under-the-radar move by the Marlins that could pay big dividends as the season progresses.
